How we tested
Most upscaler comparisons are useless because they test one flattering image — usually a landscape with lots of texture, where any model looks competent. Real work is messier, so we used four sources that break things in different ways:

That last one deserves emphasis. A model that smooths noise beautifully on skin will often destroy small type, because the same blur that flatters a cheek erases the sharp corner of a letterform. Any upscaler that only shows you portraits in its marketing is probably hiding this.
