Upscale Low-Res Images for Print

Print is unforgiving in a way screens are not. A 200px-wide logo that looks fine on a website becomes visibly broken at A3 — here is how to work out what you actually need.

Start with the arithmetic, not the image

Print quality is measured in pixels per inch, so the pixel count you need depends entirely on the physical size you are printing. The standard for quality print work is 300 DPI. Multiply your target dimensions in inches by 300 and you have your pixel requirement:

Divide the requirement by what you have to get your factor. A 1200px image destined for A4 at 3508px tall needs roughly 3×, so choose 4× and crop back.

When 300 DPI is more than you need

The 300 DPI standard assumes something held at reading distance. Viewing distance changes the requirement significantly, and applying 300 DPI to a billboard would be absurd:

  • Held in hand (books, cards, flyers) — 300 DPI.
  • Wall art at arm's length — 200 to 250 DPI is generally indistinguishable.
  • Posters viewed from a few metres — 150 DPI is usually sufficient.
  • Large-format banners — 100 DPI or lower is common practice.

Ask your printer what they actually require before upscaling to a number you invented. Many will accept less than 300 for large work, and a smaller honest file often beats a heavily reconstructed one.

Why interpolation fails at print size

On a screen, a softly interpolated image is forgiving — the display is emitting light and the viewing distance hides a lot. Print reflects light and holds still under scrutiny, so the same softness that passed on a monitor becomes an obvious blur at A3.

AI reconstruction estimates the detail that was lost rather than averaging what remains. For print work this is the difference between an image that survives close inspection and one that only worked because nobody looked closely.

Practical print workflow

  1. Find the largest original. Not the web export, not the version in a slide deck — the source file.
  2. Calculate the requirement from physical size and viewing distance, using the table above.
  3. Upscale once at the needed factor. Repeated passes compound artefacts; one pass at 4× beats two at 2×.
  4. Inspect at 100% zoom, focusing on faces, text and repeating patterns like fabric and brickwork.
  5. Export as PNG or TIFF. Never send a quality-70 JPEG to a printer — you would reintroduce exactly the compression damage you removed.
  6. Convert colour space if required. Most print work needs CMYK; check with your printer, since the conversion shifts saturated colours.

What upscaling will not rescue for print

Motion blur, severe out-of-focus and blown highlights contain no recoverable information at any size. Print magnifies these rather than hiding them. If the source has those problems, the honest answer is to reshoot or choose a different image — no amount of reconstruction substitutes for detail that was never captured.

How many pixels do I need for an A4 print?

Can I print a low-resolution image at poster size?

Often yes, because posters are viewed from further away and typically need only 150 DPI. Calculate from actual viewing distance rather than assuming 300 DPI applies to everything.

Should I upscale before or after colour correction?

Upscale first, then colour correct the larger file. Reconstruction can shift local contrast slightly, so grading afterwards means you are working with what will actually be printed.

What file format should I send to a printer?

PNG or TIFF for raster images, preserving full quality. Avoid re-saving as JPEG after upscaling, and confirm whether your printer needs CMYK conversion — that shift affects saturated colours noticeably.
