Why anime is a different problem

Photographic upscalers are trained to reconstruct organic texture — pores, fabric weave, leaves. Anime art has almost none of that. It has deliberate hard edges, large regions of flat colour, and stylised shading that follows artistic convention rather than physics.

Run illustration through a photo-oriented model and two things go wrong. Line work picks up soft halos where the model expects a gradual optical edge, and flat colour fields acquire invented texture that was never in the artist's intent. The result looks subtly wrong in a way that is hard to name but easy to see.

What good anime upscaling preserves

  • Line weight. Varying stroke thickness carries a great deal of the drawing's character. It should scale cleanly, not blur outward.

Checking the result
